Short Bio

Adrian received his Ph.D. degree from The University of Michigan in 2005. His doctoral research was primarily on electron and photon beam diagnostics for ultrafast 4th generation x-ray light sources, including hard and soft x-ray free electron lasers. Ultimately he took part in experiments that used these tools to study optically excited coherent phonon oscillations in bismuth.

After receiving his degree he accepted a post-doctoral research position at the Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics in the Laboratory for Attosecond Physics lead by Ferenc Krausz. Here he extended the techniques of attosecond spectroscopy from isolated atoms and simple molecules to condensed matter systems.

Adrian joined the MPSD at CFEL in September 2009 as an independent research group leader and professor of physics at the University of Hamburg. His group will focus on extreme-timescale dynamics in condensed matter systems, from the few-femtosecond to attosecond timescale utilizing table-top laser driven high-harmonic XUV sources as well as large-scale accelerator based x-ray facilities.

Research Interests:
  • ultrafast dynamics in condensed matter occurring on the 1 fs to attosecond timescale using table-top and accelerator-based sources

  •  development and characterization of accelerator-based x-ray lasers including LCLS, XFEL and FLASH
  • development of table-top attosecond time-resolved photoemission apparatus at CFEL

    • enhancement of high-energy cutoff harmonic flux through quasi-phase matching techniques
    • single-shot measurement of <4fs x-ray pulses at LCLS through tandem-streaking approach
