Methods

To investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of solids, we make use of short pulses of light, from THz frequencies to X-rays, using laboratory-scale sources, synchrotron facilities and Free Electron Lasers. The ultimate goal is to control and image the dynamic behavior of matter on time and lengthscales relevant for microscopic physics, stimulate new functionalities and understand how microscopic processes scale up to macroscopic phenomena.

Nonlinear Terahertz science

Control with THz pulses requires fairly high field strength and corresponding field strengths. The pulse energy of THz pulses generated by photoconductive switches driven by femtosecond oscillators is on the order of only a few femtojoule. Optical rectification sources pumped by amplified laser pulses with kHz repetition rates are typically on the order of hundreds of picojoules or field strengths of one kV/cm.
