Michael Först

Senior Scientist, Group Leader

Michael’s research focuses on nonlinear phononics and the control of ultrafast lattice-driven phase transitions in correlated electron systems. Key instrument of his table-top research is a home-built carrier-envelope-phase stable, mid-infrared femtosecond light source which enables to distinguish between field- and intensity driven processes. On top of that, Michael is exploiting ultrafast X-ray diffraction techniques at the LCLS free electron laser to track the dynamics of the lattice as well as the charge, orbital and magnetic order parameters following vibrational excitation.

Stefan Kaiser

Scientist, Group Leader

Stefan investigates the ultrafast dynamics in correlated electron systems and achieves optical control of phase transitions in complex materials using multiple techniques ranging from ultrafast optical pump-probe over a broad frequency range to time-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy and ultrafast transport measurements. His research focus is on light induced superconductivity in cuprates and ultrafast quantum many-body dynamics in solid state Mott or CDW systems.

Jesse C. Petersen

Scientist, Group Leader

Jesse does ultrafast experimental studies of strongly-corellated electron materials. Using probes including THz spectroscopy and time-resolved photoemission, he works on understanding the changes in electronic structure as materials undergo photo-induced phase transitions.
