Evening lecture at DESY Science Café:

On Wednesday, 25th April 5pm, Sebastian Loth will give a public evening lecture at the DESY Science Café.
The lecture will introduce techniques to image and manipulate individual atoms and how we can use this ability to explore the frontiers of miniaturization in information technology.

For more information, please follow this link to the Scienc Cafe website (http://sciencecafe.desy.de/)
(the lecture will be in german)

Information can be stored in atomically assembled antiferromagnets

We used the ability to manipulate individual atoms with the scanning tunneling microscope to build the world’s smallest magnetic memory bit. Twelve iron atoms form a bit of information that is stable for many hours at low temperature. The iron spins order antiferromagnetically, so neighboring spins point in opposite directions. The bits have no magnetic stray field making it possible to pack them at least 100 times denser than possible in today’s hard disk drives.
