Jan. 2012: Information can be stored in atomically assembled antiferromagnets We used the ability to manipulate individual atoms with the scanning tunneling microscope to build the world’s smallest magnetic memory bit. Twelve iron atoms form a bit of information that is stable for many hours at low temperature. The iron spins order antiferromagnetically, so neighboring spins point in opposite directions. The bits have no magnetic stray field making it possible to pack them at least 100 times denser than possible in today’s hard disk drives. ⇒ CFEL News |
